Prayer to Saint Agatha
Saint Agatha, saint of breast cancer, you withstood the advances from unwanted suitors, and suffered pain and torture for your devotion to God. We celebrate your faith, dignity, and martyrdom, and ask that you protect us all from cancer and other violations, especially [name person] who is ready to receive your holy intercession. Amen.
Saint of Breast Cancer
Saint Agatha
Born in 231 in Sicily, Saint Agatha would one day become one of the most highly revered virgin martyrs. She made a choice early on to devote her life to God and remain a consecrated virgin. That did not deter her male suitors, though, and one of them, in an effort to get her to renounce her vows, had her arrested and imprisioned during a Christian persecution. However, Agatha remained firm in her dedication to God. This angered the man, so he ordered her to be tortured and her breasts cut off.
Despite receiving no medical care, Agatha’s wounds miraculously healed during a vision she had being comforted by St. Peter. Her captor ordered that she be tortured more and it is believed that Agatha passed away in 251. Because of her ordeal and miraculous healing from her forced breast removal, Saint Agatha has become the patron saint of those with breast cancer and offers comfort, care and hope to those patients.
